TRADITIONAL ARTIST OF PATUA PAINTINGS

Abed Chitrakar is an artist of Patua Paintings. Patua is a popular style of folk painting from West Bengal. This kind of painting is traditionally done on a piece of cloth known as a pati or patta. Abed Chitrakar uses the colours which are naturally derived from herbs and plants.

Abed learned this ancestral art from his sister’s husband, his Jijaji named Late Shri Niranjan Chitrakar. He learned the nauances of this art form from his Jijaji who was his Guru.

Abed along with his sister practices this art form since many years. According to Abed Chitrakaar there are around 250 artists in the east and western region of Medinipur. He says that if organizations, corporate sector and designers come forward to support their art then many Patua painters will get their livelihood and this traditional art of west Bengal can be revived.
